Sample Guidelines from Towson University:
- Call or visit the Office of Disability Support Services to schedule
an appointment. The director or professional staff members are available
to meet with students.
- During your appointment, the staff member will discuss your disability
and the types of accommodations that have been successful for you in
the past. Be sure that documentation of your disability is available
for review at the meeting. Documentation should be current (in most
cases within three to five years of the current date, depending upon
the circum-stances) and completed by a qualified practitioner. Assistance
in locating a qualified practitioner to conduct an assessment is available.
All documentation is confidential.
- You will receive a memorandum for each of your instructors, specifying
your needed accommodations. All services provided must be supported
by the submitted documentation.
- Give the memorandum to your instructors and discuss your accommodations
with them during the first week of the semester. DSS staff is available
to provide help with this, if needed.
- Throughout the semester, DSS staff members are available to meet with
you to discuss progress or problems and provide assistance. Types of
direct services provided include help with time management, study and
test-taking strategies, and reading and writing skills. Additionally,
you will be informed about and encouraged to take advantage of appropriate
supportive programs and services.
- Students are responsible for reporting to the DSS at the beginning
of each semester to request accommodations and services and to pick
up memos to give instructors.
