Voter Registration Requirements

Under the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, offices providing services to students with disabilities at public colleges in Maryland are considered "Voter registration agencies." DSS offices should obtain training in how to complete Voter Registration Application Forms.

DSS offices must:

  1. Post notice offering voter registration assistance,
  2. Distribute Voter Registration Application Forms on request,
  3. Provide assistance in completing the forms unless the applicant refuses, and
  4. Accept the completed forms for transmittal to the Maryland State Board of Elections.

If an individual needs assistance due to a disability, the DSS office may make the necessary accommodations; however, employees may not discuss or assist in the selection of a party affiliation.
