Dr. Judy E. Ackerman
Vice President and Provost
Rockville Campus
Dr. Judy E. Ackerman has served as Vice President and Provost of the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College since January 2003. She is the chief academic officer for a campus of just under 16,000 students. At the Rockville campus she provides vision and leadership to promote student success.

During more than 30 years of service at Montgomery College, Dr. Ackerman has served as a Professor of Mathematics, Collegewide Honors Coordinator, Math Center Coordinator, Chair of Mathematics, and Instructional Dean of Science, Engineering and Mathematics.

Dr. Ackerman is nationally known for her work in community college mathematics education. She served as President of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), an organization that consists of 44 affiliate groups and is the only organization exclusively devoted to providing a forum for the improvement of mathematics instruction in the first two years of college. During the 2008 – 2009 academic year she will represent AMATYC on the American Association of Community College’s Commission on Academic, Student and Community Development. Dr. Ackerman has published numerous articles and presents nationally on mathematics related topics, including math anxiety, public school partnerships with community colleges, and gender equity in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Dr. Ackerman is a board member of Rockville Economic Development, Inc and served on the Rockville Mayor’s Transition Advisory Group (2008). She served as honorary co-chair of the American Cancer Society 2008 Relay for Life (2008) that was held on the Rockville campus. She is also a volunteer for activities of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Dr. Ackerman earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and an M.A.T. in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Her bachelor’s degree is from Queens College (CUNY) in Mathematics, with minors in Physics and Education.
