The Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1937 in Odessa, Ukraine. At the end of the nineteenth century, Odessa became a major cultural center, visited by many musical personalities including violin pedagogue Piotr Stoliarsky and his pupils David Oistrakh and Nathan Milstein. Coming from this extraordinary musical tradition, the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra was the first performing arts organization in the entire country to have its funding rank raised by the government from regional to national status since the independence of Ukraine in 1991. This prominent position was an acknowledgment of the dynamic progress under the direction of Maestro Hobart Earle, who has conducted hundreds of concerts with the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra to wide acclaim in major concert halls of the United States, London, Madrid, Budapest, the Great Halls of the Moscow Conservatory, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, and the General Assembly of the United Nations.
