Montgomery College Secures $400,000 Grant for Business Student Scholarships
NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation’s Gift to Support Students in College’s Macklin Business Institute Honors Program
Montgomery College
recently secured a two-year grant totaling $400,000 from The NASDAQ OMX
Educational Foundation to create an endowed scholarship fund for students
participating in the Gordon and Marilyn Macklin Business Institute Honors
Program at Montgomery
College. This is the
foundation’s first grant to a community college business program.
The NASDAQ OMX Educational
Foundation donated the grant in memory of Gordon Macklin, the former president
of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) and founder of The
NASDAQ Stock Market, who passed away in 2007. Macklin’s own generosity helped
start the Macklin Business Institute Honors Program at Montgomery College.
Originally a one-year program for sophomore students, the Macklin Business
Institute Honors Program will expand this fall to also include a two-year
program for recent high school graduates who attend Montgomery College.
The
Macklin Business Institute at Montgomery
College provides an innovative,
high-quality business honors-level educational program to the College’s top
business students. The program features honors coursework, internships,
seminars, a student-run business, community service opportunities and
scholarship support. More than 130 students have graduated from the program and
transferred to some of the country’s top four-year universities, including Columbia University, New York
University, Georgetown University and the University of Maryland.
“This new partnership
between The NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation and Montgomery
College to support future business
leaders is a wonderful way to celebrate Gordon Macklin’s significant
contributions to the financial industry and to Montgomery
College,” said Dr. Brian K. Johnson,
president of Montgomery
College. “The students in
the Macklin Business Institute Honors Program will continue his legacy for
generations to come.”
