State of the Art Facility
We are located in The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center on the MC Takoma Park/Silver Spring West Campus. Once the Giant Bakery, the building was reconfigured into an innovative educational facility for the visual arts and design. With an art gallery, Art Library, lecture hall, fine arts and digital design classrooms, and an art store, the building enhances the learning experience.
Macintosh Computer Labs
The SA+D has two state-of-the-art Macintosh computer labs with industry standard graphic design, Web design, and digital photography and photo editing software. Currently Macintosh computers in the Cafritz Arts Center have the Adobe Creative Suite 5 (CS5.5) design software that includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver. The Open Lab hours are posted each semester for the Cafritz classrooms. In addition, there is an open Mac Lab in the Student Services Center across the pedestrian bridge.

Pre-College Portfolio Development Program
There are two types of courses in this program and they are described below. The purpose of both is to assist students in preparing a portfolio for admission to a college level art program. Contact Nan McCoy for more information about either pre-college course option at Nan.McCoy@montgomerycollege.edu or 240-567-5806.
Pre-College Portfolio Development Class
Fall 2011 Instructor: Daniel Shay
This studio class is offered to high school juniors and seniors (sophomores accepted on a space-available basis) and adults who want to build artistic skills and develop a well-rounded portfolio for college admissions reviews. The class is focused on drawing with a variety of media including charcoal, pencil, and pastel. Students will be expected to keep a sketchbook and draw from a human skeleton and still-life objects. Students in this class purchase their own art supplies. This class is offered year round in Saturday classes running for 4 or 5 weeks.
Pre-College Portfolio Institute
Program Coordinator: Jane Walsh
Initiated in the summer of 2009, this innovative program is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors as well as adults who will be applying for admission to premier art colleges throughout the nation. The program is based on the art college educational model; focused on observational drawing, basic design, and painting in oil. In addition, all students will be introduced to the Adobe Photoshop to document work completed in the institute for their portfolios. Instructors mentor students and advise on selecting work for each student to include in their college admissions portfolio.
Emergency Contact Information Form(PDF)
Required for all students ages 17 and under.
