Your writing tutor will help you improve your writing skills by providing:
    • A non-stressful learning community;
    • Access to an essential component of the writing process—draft feedback;
    • Resources for improving writing;
    • Assessment and evaluation of your writing skills.

 2.  Where and how can I find a writing tutor? 

    • In HU 002, Humanities Building, ground floor, Rockville Campus.

3.  How can I get an appointment with a writing tutor?

    • Go to HU 002 during tutoring hours, and sign in at the front desk, and fill out a tutoring session sheet;
    • Remember that tutoring is on a drop-in basis only: you cannot make an appointment in advance. 

4.  Who tutors in the Writing Center?  

    • Professional faculty tutors. 

5.  What can my writing tutor do for me?

Your tutor can:
    • Assist you with any stage of your writing process;
    • Respond to a particular writing assignment;
    • Point out errors in mechanics and grammar;
    • Provide worksheets and handouts to offer further support.

6.  What can’t my Writing Tutor do for me?

Your tutor cannot:
    • Write or proofread your papers;
    • Re-grade, comment on a grade, or guarantee a grade;
    • Correct your papers.

7.  What can I do to get the most out of my tutoring session?

To get the most out of your tutoring session, you can:
    • Be organized when you arrive;
    • Bring a legible copy, preferably typed, of your writing;
    • Bring your instructor’s assignment sheet, any directions he or she has given you about the assignment, and your textbooks;
    • Completely fill out tutoring session sheet;
    • Allow sufficient time to be tutored and to implement the changes your tutor recommends.

8.  What kind of writing can I bring to my writing tutor?

As an MC student, you can bring a wide range of writing assignments to a writing tutor.  Some of the most popular assignments include:
    • EN essays;
    • Research paper assignments from other disciplines;
    • College and professional school applications;
    • Business letters;
    • Resumes.

9.  What kind of help will I receive from a writing tutor?

Your writing tutor will:
    • Help explain the parameters of your assignment;
    • Encourage you to generate your own ideas;
    • Assist you in the formulation or the refinement of your main idea or thesis;
    • Assist you in developing strategies to organize your essay;
    • Assist you in understanding your problems in grammar and mechanics;
    • Provide helpful handouts and/or references in your textbooks on a variety of writing issues;
    • Encourage you to learn to revise and correct your mistakes.

10.  What should I expect of my writing tutor?

You can expect your tutor to:
    • Listen carefully and respectfully as you articulate your writing needs;
    • Be flexible in helping you maximize your tutoring session;
    • Shift ownership of the writing task to you the writer.

11.  What should my writing tutor expect of me?

Your tutor will expect you to:
    • Be prepared for a discussion about your writing by being open-minded and bringing all necessary materials;
    • Be an active participant in the discussion;
    • Be realistic in your expectations;
    • Be motivated to learn about your writing strengths and weaknesses;
    • Be prepared to revisit the tutors in HU 002.
